Fully-grown coconuts come in all shapes and sizes, especially depending on the season and amount of rainfall. We have just received another batch of our amazing Coconut Bowls from our workshop and some of them are nearly double the size of others, which is crazy!! It is amazing to see how versatile and different each bowl can be from another, they really are 1 in a million – just like us!
The life of a coconut really depends on what it is needed for in the long term; whether they are being grown to produce coconut water, coconut flour or oil for example – their lifespan can vary from 7 months to over 12 months!
Sean and I LOVE coconut water; it is so refreshing and definitely slightly addictive, which I guess isn’t that bad… I had never tried it until I met Sean and now I can’t seem to get enough of it! Anyway, a coconut contains the best coconut water when it is 6 – 7 months old. Its green shell is absolutely full of fresh, sweet coconut water, making it perfect for drinking on a nice hot, sunny day (although that’s rare in the UK)!! I must say though, drinking out of a fresh coconut would be much better than out of the carton… it doesn’t quite feel the same!
After 9 months, the coconut begins to mature and the amount of coconut water declines as it begins to form the coconut flesh inside. By 12 months the coconut has fully ripened and has changed from the green coconut to a brown hairy one (which we are all much more familiar with!!). The coconut is now perfect for making coconut oil, milk and flour.
Tall coconut palm trees produce coconuts until they’re around 50 years old! Some are then unfortunately chopped down, burnt as waste and then replaced so the coconut harvest is able to start all over again. As you know, we reclaim some of the unwanted palm wood to create our wooden coconut spoons! However, palm trees are meant to continue living for another 40-50 years – and live a pretty decent life, creating the most amazing paradise landscapes and instagram worthy pictures!
Plastic is being talked about now more than ever before. It is a leading worldwide issue that we’re going to have to face head on – as the damage caused by plastic has been done by non other than ourselves. There is more pressure than ever to stop the use of plastic. And it is amazing to see that there has finally been plans put in place to help reduce the amount of plastic we’re using and contributing to the abuse of our beautiful planet. We plan to incorporate many more up-cycled and sustainable products to our range, so we can help to introduce a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of life for everyone.
